Shovelhead or Evo: which FXR suits you?
Shovelhead (1982-1983)
The first FXRs, such as the FXR and FXRS Super Glide II, with the 80 cubic inch Shovelhead. Already rubber-mounted and with a five-speed gearbox. Scarce and sought after by enthusiasts. Also read Shovelhead to order.
Evolution (1984-1994)
The reliable 1340 cc Evo engine, easy to maintain. Versions such as the Super Glide, the Low Rider, the FXLR Low Rider Custom and the touring FXRT Sport Glide.
CVO (1999-2000)
After 1994 the FXR came back briefly as a limited CVO series: the FXR2, FXR3 and FXR4. Rare and popular with collectors.
Inspection and costs
Registration and what it costs
Registration rules differ per EU country. In the Netherlands, every FXR is from before 2006, so it is inspected at a regular RDW inspection station. The step-by-step plan is in US Harley inspection checklist and registering a US Harley in Europe.
The price includes shipping to the port of Rotterdam. After arrival there are costs for unloading the container, the customs declaration and VAT. Import duty is 0% for US-origin bikes since 1 July 2026, provided there is proof of origin. You can find an overview in the cost of importing a Harley. Feel free to ask for an all-in calculation for a specific bike.
Is the FXR 30 years or older and still original? Then it can be imported as a collector’s item. In the Netherlands that means 0% import duty and 9% VAT. Read how that works in importing a classic from the USA.

Can I see the bike before I buy?
Not in person, but every FXR is filmed: a walk-around and a start-up. You also get the Carfax or damage report before you pay.
How long does shipping take?
From New York about 4 weeks, from Los Angeles about 2 months.
Can I have an FXR inspected myself?
Yes. In the Netherlands every FXR is from before 2006 and is inspected at a regular RDW station. See the step-by-step plan for the RDW inspection. In other EU countries the local rules apply.
What is the difference between an FXR, FXRS and FXLR?
They all share the same FXR frame with the rubber-mounted engine. The FXR is the base model, the FXRS the more luxurious version and the FXLR the Low Rider Custom.
What is the difference between an FXR and a Dyna?
The FXR (1982-1994) has a stiff triangulated frame with the engine in three rubber mounts. The Dyna (from 1991) has a simpler frame that was cheaper to build. Many riders feel the FXR handles more tightly. Read more about the history in two FXRs in one trip.
How do I pay, and is it safe?
You get an invoice first. You then pay into the company’s US business account, not a private account.
