Registering a Harley after import from the USA

Has your Harley from America arrived? Then you’ll want to get it registered as soon as possible. Registration rules differ per European country, but the steps are similar everywhere: customs, an inspection and then registration. Below we explain it with the two countries our customers come from most: the Netherlands and Germany.

How do I register an imported Harley?

First you complete customs, so the import is officially settled. Then the bike is inspected by the vehicle authority or an approved inspection body in your country. Bring the US Title and the customs papers. Once the bike passes, it gets a registration and plates. You can do this yourself. On request we put you in touch with partners in the Netherlands who handle the inspection and Dutch registration for you; with Dutch papers the bike is an EU-registered vehicle.

The Netherlands: before and after 2006

In the Netherlands, a motorcycle up to and including model year 2005 is inspected at a regular RDW inspection station. That is simple and relatively cheap. A motorcycle from model year 2006 has to go to the RDW in Lelystad. That inspection is more extensive and considerably more expensive. Germany: individual inspection and H plate

In Germany, a US motorcycle without EU papers usually needs an individual inspection (Einzelabnahme, § 21 StVZO) by TÜV, DEKRA or GTÜ. With the report, the Title and the customs papers you then go to the registration office. Is the bike 30 years or older and largely original? Then an H plate (historic registration) is often possible, with a flat road tax of 46.02 euros a year for motorcycles.

Which modifications does my Harley need?

American motorcycles sometimes need some modifications. Pay particular attention to the exhaust, which must stay within the noise limits. You often also need reflectors, and lighting that is always on in America must be switchable. Exactly what is needed differs per country and per bike. A good motorcycle workshop knows what has to be done.

How do I get the bike to the inspection?

Without a registration you can’t just ride on the road. You can take the bike to the inspection on a trailer. In many countries you can also get a temporary plate for the trip to the inspection, such as a one-day plate in the Netherlands or a short-term plate (Kurzzeitkennzeichen) in Germany. Make sure the bike is insured that day too. The unloading company in the Rotterdam area can also arrange transport for you. Feel free to ask us for advice; we help you after the purchase too.
