What is an Evo?

In 1984 Harley-Davidson introduced the Evolution V2, the successor to the Shovelhead. Cylinders and heads are aluminium, so the engine cools better and suffers much less from oil leaks than its predecessors. The Big Twin Evo has 80 cubic inches, about 1,340 cc. It was seen as the first truly reliable big Harley and helped the company back on its feet after the difficult seventies.

Besides the Big Twin, the Sportster also got an Evo engine from 1986 (883, 1100 and later 1200 cc), which lasted until 2003. This page is mainly about the big Evo.

What we look for in an Evo in America

  • Oil leaks. An Evo leaks much less than a Shovelhead, but we still look closely at the cylinder base and the gaskets.
  • Cold start and running. We want to hear it start cold and see it ride. We film that for you.
  • Original or modified. Different exhaust, carburettor or big bore kit? We tell you honestly. It matters for the inspection and for customs.
  • Matching numbers and papers. Does the VIN match the title, and the engine number the frame?
  • History. You get the available American vehicle history, such as a Carfax or damage report.

Importing an Evo: what does it cost?

Evos up to and including model year 1996 are 30 years or older in 2026. In original condition they can be declared as a collector's item on import into the EU: usually 0% import duty and a reduced VAT rate (9% in the Netherlands, 7% in Germany) instead of 6% import duty and the standard rate. Every year another model year is added. Read how in importing a classic from the USA.

Road tax rules differ per country. In Germany an original Evo from 30 years can get an H plate; in the Netherlands only Evos from before 1988 are road tax-free. All the limits are in when is a motorcycle a classic, the total costs at the cost of importing a Harley.
